Abstract
It was recognized long before the advent of science, that reactions were best carried out in the liquid phase. Whilst with the development of organic chemistry various solvents such as alcohols, ethers or aromatic hydrocarbons have been found to serve as convenient media for numerous types of reactions, inorganic chemistry was mainly developed in solutions in water. As a consequence analytical chemistry, physical chemistry and electrochemistry were also mainly concerned with the study of aqueous systems.
