Abstract
Lunar Radio Astronomy Observatory. Terrestrial, orbital and lunar environments are compared from the radio-astronomical point of view. The terrestrial environment is limited at long waves by the ionosphere, atmospheric noise and man-made interference. The centimeter and shorter waves are plagued by atmospheric absorption and radiation. Earth orbiting radio telescopes may considerably reduce these effects, yet, even then, the ionospheric and exospheric noise is important at long waves, and man-made interference will still be present almost throughout the whole radio spectrum. The lunar environment on the opposite side of the Moon should be almost completely free from the above mentioned limitations.
The instruments proposed for the Lunar Radio Astronomy Observatory include interferometers for aperture synthesis in the kilometer, hectometer and decameter wave ranges. These include aerials based on the Moon or orbiting the Moon. Laser or radio links could be used for information transfer to the receivers. The use of lunar craters for stationary radio telescopes is considered as well as the employment of inflated structures using polymerizing plastic filling for steerable aerial types. Accurate dishes are needed for decimeter, centimeter and millimeter wave ranges with cooled parametric amplifiers, masers or thermal detection radiometers in the focus. Aperture synthesis is again recommended in the decimeter and even shorter waves.
Some possible types of research at a Lunar Radio Astronomy Observatory during lunar nighttime include the following: galactic and extra-galactic low angular resolution spectral studies at very low frequencies concerned with the bulk matter distribution with increasing “redshift”. Very important are high resolution observations of low frequency galactic radiations and of a large number of extra-galactic radio sources. The very low frequency spectra of extra-galactic radio-sources should show progressive shifts of their frequencies of maximal flux densities toward longer waves with increasing “red shift”. Thus it should be possible to measure their “red shifts” by radio observations alone. The lunar environment is also advantageous for the 21 cm hydrogen line and OH line studies. It should also help us in the achievement of ultimate sensitivities in the decimeter and centimeter wave ranges. The stronger radio sources, the galactic center, the planets, HII regions and some galactic nebulae are among the possible targets in this spectral range.
The lunar day will be unfavourable for all high sensitivity observations, because the Sun is the dominant radio source in the sky, especially at shorter waves. The main object for studies at this time will be the Sun itself and the solar corona.
Résumé
Observatoire Radio-Astronomique Lunaire.
