Abstract

The potential usefulness of an artificial satellite in the field of meteorology is examined. Initially, the standard “station model” used in preparation of weather charts is evaluated for the importance of the various measurements, and for the way these are used. The possibility of making the same measurements is evaluated, the result being that identical measurements are generally not possible. Alternate measurements to provide the same type of information are then studied, and a number found. Unique measurements possible only in a satellite are investigated. It is concluded that a comprehensive satellite meteorology can be developed. Illustrations of some of the techniques are included in the discussion.
