Abstract

Analyses used in determining development test facility design requirements for ion propulsion systems are described. A comparison is made of ion rockets and chemical rockets for transferring a satellite from a 6 620-kilometer radius orbit to an orbit having a period of 24 hours. This comparison shows that ion-propelled vehicle weight is one-third the chemical rocket propelled vehicle weight if 90 days are allowed for the orbit transfer.
