Abstract

Cycloheptatriene, a seven-membered ring polyene, was obtained by Ladenburg (118) in 1881, and by Merling (122) in 1891, by the systematic degradation of an alkaloid, tropine. Its structure was established by Willstätter (241) by synthesis. This substance, called tropilidene, was a very unstable yellow oil and did not show any aromatic character, in contrast to the corresponding six-membered “polyene”, viz. benzene. At the same time Merling had obtained a yellow, crystalline product by heating tropilidene with bromine but was unable to establish its structure.
