Beim Erwachsenen ist die Trachea im Durchschnitt 10–13 cm lang und 15–20 mm weit. Sie reicht vom 6. HWK bis zum 6. BWK und enthält 15–20 hufeisenförmige Knorpelspangen. Zwischen maximaler Beugung und Streckung besteht ein Längenunterschied bis zu 50%.
