Zusammenfassung

N-Schottland wird größtenteils von Gebirgen eingenommen, den „Highlands“, dem Hochland schlechtweg: nur an der E-Küste erstrecken sich niedrige Plateaus und kleine Ebenen, das nordschottische Flachland, manchmal als „Northern Lowlands“ bezeichnet [11–13]. Diese beiden großen natürlichen Einheiten scharf gegeneinander abzugrenzen, ist fast unmöglich. Denn meist verzahnen sie sich in einen mehr oder minder breiten Übergangsgürtel, in welchem sich das Hochland auflöst und zuletzt mit einzelnen Vorbergen im Flachland ausklingt, während dieses umgekehrt mit breiten Tälern dazwischen eindringt. Doch bleiben auch dann die Gegensätze in Höhe, Form und Klima bestehen, und diese prägen sich entsprechend in den Tatsachen des Menschen aus.
