Abstract
One of the problems concerning the Golgi apparatus that the light microscopist thought he had solved despite the extreme pleiomorphism of the organelle and its variation with stage of development was the problem of replication. Cajal, who in 1914 discussed the numerous developmental divergencies, considered in some detail the observations on this score of Perroncito (1910), Marcora (1912), Fañanás (1912), and Deineka (1912) all of whom believed some division of the structure was involved. There is also the earlier work already mentioned of replication of the organelle in the development of reproductive cells.
