Abstract
Of the cellular organelles, the lysosomes entered the scene late and indirectly. de Duve (1969), who made the initial discovery, dates their introduction on December 16, 1949. He and a few colleagues, working in what he describes as a derelict laboratory on another problem, found them more or less accidentally in the form of latent acid phosphatase activity.
