Abstract

In these notes we shall omit many details which can be found in a paper which was published in Nuclear Physics a few months ago [1]. We are concerned, through a non-local treatment of quantum electrodynamics (QED), with two problems:

  1. 1.

Gauge invariance and the photon mass: it has been thought for a long time that gauge invariance leads automatically to a vanishing physical mass of the photon. Recently [2], examples have been given which clearly indicate that this is not necessarily so. One can also show [3] that a consistent formulation of QED can be constructed which allows for a non-zero mass from the beginning.

Lecture given at the IV. Internationale Universitätswochen für Kernphysik, Schladming, 25 February–10 March 1965.
