Zusammenfassung

Die wichtigste Indikation für eine Therapie mit Lithiumsalzen ist die Anwendung zur Rückfallverhütung bei affektiven Psychosen („sekundäre Prävention“). Die phasenverhütende Wirkung von Lithium kann für Menschen, die unbehandelt weitere Rezidive von Depressionen, Manien oder schizoaffektiven Psychosen erleiden würden, einen großen Gewinn bedeuten: Die Lithiumtherapie befreit sie von der Angst vor Rückfällen, ermöglicht ihnen eine stabile Lebensführung und gewährleistet ihre soziale Integration. Weiterhin sind Lithiumsalze bei der Therapie der Manie von großer Bedeutung und werden neuerdings auch bei der Thyreotoxikose und bei der Granulozytopenie erfolgreich eingesetzt.
