Zusammenfassung
Im folgenden soll ausschnitthaft eine Geschichte der Psychopharmaka im 20. Jahrhundert skizziert werden. Aus einer Fülle möglicher Themen wurde eine Auswahl nach drei Kriterien getroffen: Erstens schien es geboten, die „Weiterentwicklung“ altbekannter psychotroper Substanzen,deren jahrhundertealte Geschichte im Kap. 1 erörtert wurde, bis in die neueste Zeit zu verfolgen (s. Kap. 2.3.); neben dem Argument der geschichtlichen Kontinuität war hierbei die Möglichkeit verlockend, einige Entwicklungstendenzen der modernen Psychopharmakologie aufzeigen zu können. Zweitens schien es wertvoll, die Geschichte der Entdeckung der modernen Psychopharmaka aus der Sicht ihrer Entdecker aufzuzeigen, Geschichte also von denen erzählen zu lassen, die sie mitgestalteten (s. Kap. 2.4.); auch hier kommen Konzepte und Tendenzen der modernen Psychopharmakologie in verschiedenen Meinungen zur Sprache. Drittens sollte ein Rückblick sowie Ausblick geboten werden: Rückblick auf die Psychopharmakotherapie im 20. Jahrhundert vor der Ära der zeitgenössischen Psychopharmaka (s. Kap. 2.2); dies war eine Zeit — kaum 40 Jahre entfernt — in der mangels geeigneter Therapieformen für Psychosen noch keine „Psychiatrie der offenen Türen“ entwickelt werden konnte; Ausblick schließlich auf die kommenden Jahrzehnte (s. Kap. 2.5.), die Psychopharmaka erwarten lassen, welche den psychisch Kranken nicht besser „manipulieren“, sondern ihm noch besser helfen sollen, sich selbst aus der Gefangenschaft der Krankheit zu befreien.
