Pionic Atoms, the Relativistic Mean-Field Theory and the Pion-Nucleon Scattering Lengths

Abstract

The pseudoscalar πNN mixing parameter x=0.24±0.06 and the strength of the scalar meson field for pions \({{S}_{\pi }}=-34\pm 14\) MeV have been determined from pionic atoms. A model for the low-energy π-nucleon interaction is proposed and scattering lengths (volumes) calculated.
