An Organization & Resources Model for Adapting Office Systems to Organizational Structures

Abstract

Office systems have to conform to organizational structures governing work in an enterprise. This means they have to be configured according to these structures and must obey the rules defined explicitly or implicitly by the enterprise organization. The Organization & Resources model (OR) defines a conceptual data model for representing organizational structures and resources controlled by an office system. Its implementation is a database containing a representation of the organizational structure of a company, its actors and resources. This database provides the information necessary to adapt services of an office system to organizational requirements.

With its dialog interface, the OR model provides an electronic organization reference manual. To make this information available to application systems, an application programming interface (API) is supplied. The OR model provides a means for adapting office software systems to a company’s static and dynamic organizational structure. It comprises a representation of office objects and their relations that are maintained by the underlying office system.
