An Expert System for Legal Case Research Support

This paper discusses issues relating to the design of an expert system to aid lawyers in using statutory legal knowledge for case research. A brief survey of approaches to development of expert systems for law is provided. We identify some features that are important in the design of such expert systems. We then describe an expert system dealing with the U.S. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, which is being developed jointly by Hardlaw Software, Inc. and the University of Maryland. In particular, we demonstrate the utility of some of the design features, by describing their use in this system.
