Extranets of National Tourist Organisations: The Internet and planned Extranet Web-site of the Danish Tourist Board — compared with existing or planned Extranets of Australia, Austria and Norway

This paper falls in four parts. Firstly, Extranets are defined — as application of Web-standards in more or less closed user groups of independent firms — and put into a certain theoretical perspective, namely the so-called Industrial Networks approach, which may help understand the rationale and effects of interorganisational phenomena like Extranets.

In the second part we concentrate on the Web-site of the Danish Tourist Board (DTB) — and the planned associated Extranet (~Intranet). We will briefly mention the history of Dandata — which was established about 10 years ago — but was ‘put on the Net’ in the beginning of the 1997 with its almost 20,000 products — with much of the information in as many as 10 different languages under the name of Guide Denmark within the open Web-site of the DTB. There are two elements of the DTB Extranet: a) An ‘industrynet’, and b) and Web-based updating interface (mask) to be used by the local tourist information centres (TICs) in Denmark to update product data etc. in the product database Dandata.

In the third part of the paper we will review a number of other existing and planned Extranets of National Tourist Organisations, NTOs, specifically these: The existing Extranets of the Australian Tourist Commission (ATC), the existing Extranet of Austria (ANTO and ASART: TourMIS), and the planned Extranets of Norway (NORI, among others: Norwegian Tourist Board and Norwegian Computing Centre). In each case, we will review the objectives of the specific Extranet, features, participants/users, control of access, and foreseen costs/benefits.

Fourthly, we compare the Extranets of the four NTOs, and tentatively generalize about typical objectives, costs/benefits of NTO Extranets, and finally evaluate the relevance of the Industrial Networks approach to understanding Extranets.
