Zusammenfassung
Von der ersten Überlieferung des „Morbus Hypochondriacus“durch Galen von Pergamon (130–201 n.Ch.) bis zu den aktuellen psychiatrischen Klassifikationsvorschlägen war der Begriff der Hypochondrie und das damit verbundene Krankheitsmodell mehreren Wandlungen unterworfen (Fischer-Homberger 1970). Die Grundlegung des gegenwärtigen Hypochondrie-Konzeptes erfolgte mit der Einführung des „Neurasthenie“-Begriffes (Beard 1869), der — in Anlehnung an die klassische Hysterie-Konzeption — zur Beschreibung multipler und wechselhafter somatischer Beschwerden diente. Die Hypochondrie hingegen, von Beard auch Pathophobie genannt, wurde zunehmend auf den Merkmalskomplex der nosophobischen Krankheitsbefürchtung bzw. Krankheitsüberzeugung eingeengt (Fischer-Homberger 1970, Schäfer 1980). Dies führte schließlich zu einer weitgehend synonymen Verwendung der Begriffe Hypochondrie und Nosophobie, wie sie auch den gegenwärtigen Klassifikationssystemen des DSM-IV (APA 1994) und der ICD-10 (WHO 1992) zugrundegelegt ist.
