Abstract

Since the last major review of the chemistry of pentacyclic triterpenes by WHITE (231) there has been continuous activity in this field and many new compounds have been isolated and had their structures elucidated. Some of the reasons for these rapid developments are discussed in this article. They are of interest because they illustrate in a particular field what is happening in natural product chemistry in general.
