Pain: a Case Study for the Mind-Body Problem

Part of the Acta Neurochirurgica Supplementum book series (NEUROCHIRURGICA, volume 38)

I want to discuss a puzzle about pain which may be called a philosophical puzzle because it is very general in nature and cannot, I think, be solved by empirical means, at least not by experiments as they are performed in empirical pain research1. The puzzle I have in mind is an aspect or facet of the larger mind-body problem, and it has to do with the role and nature of consciousness.
