Abstract
The paper discusses several issues which will need to be addressed in the development of effective feature-based systems for integrated computer-aided design, analysis and manufacture. Design features are often significantly different from the features appropriate for applications downstream of design. This implies that, even in a system permitting design by features, some form of automated recognition of application features will be needed. It is pointed out that this is easier from a model which already contains design feature information than from a pure geometric model, the basis of most research to date on automated feature recognition. Closely related to feature recognition is the process of feature validation, necessary for checking that features created by the designer are not invalidated as the result of subsequent design operations. The paper concludes by making a case for a feature definition language which will permit the integrated system to be configured flexibly to meet the precise requirements of any organisation using it. This will also have strong implications on the development of standards for the transfer of CAD information between different systems.
