Abstract
Automation systems on the field level are characterized by a distribution of the control functions between separate devices. The communication of the subsystems is more and more performed by buses. During the design of such systems the funtionality and the performance have to be proved. For both we propose a common modelling and simulation approach which includes the protocol behaviour of the participants, their interactions, and the system dynamics. As the basis of the simulation of the whole system we choose VHDL simulators which are often used in design of digital systems. The modelling approach is detailed on a LON-based system. With a task of process control the features of a simulation supported design are demonstrated.
