Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography, commonly known as SPECT, is a functional neuroimaging technique which provides information on cerebral perfusion. Perfusion SPECT images reflect neuronal activity, due to the relationship between cerebral blood flow and metabolism. Thus, brain SPECT can be used for the study of the normal brain, but since symptoms are a reflection of brain activity, this technique can also be helpful in studies of brain pathology, providing some insight into the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, for example.
