Abstract

Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) was used to study the thermally induced oxidation of C60, C70, and the insoluble fullerene black with molecular oxygen at 570 K under in-situ conditions. The nature of the fullerene oxides formed under these conditions will be discussed. The reactivity of the investigated fullerene materials is compared to that of active carbon, which was chosen as reference system. Additional oxidation experiments using ozone as oxidizing reagent were performed at room temperature.
