Summary
In this study the effectiveness of botulinum toxin injection in a group of 50 consecutive patients with hemifacial spasm was investigated. Two hundred and thirty injections were performed over a period of 46 months. Each patient received 2 to 12 injections (mean = 4.5). Mean delay of reinjection was 17.4 weeks. Mean duration of effective relief from spasms following all injections was 15 weeks. Ninety percent of patients improved more than 70%. Efficacy is maintained for up to 12 injections. Complications were noted in one-third of the injections: blurred vision (7.4%), excessive upper facial weakness (5.2%) or excessive lower facial weakness (5.6%), ptosis (4.3%), tearing (3.5%), and dry eye (1.7%). Any systemic effects were registered. Some questions related to botulinum toxin treatment are addressed.
