Die erste Version von Matlab wurde Ende 1970 an den Universitäten von New Mexico und Stanford entwickelt. Matlab war als Lehrmittel für den Unterricht in Fächern wie Lineare Algebra oder Numerische Mathematik vorgesehen. Es sollte den Studenten die einfache Verwendung der numerischen Programmpakete Linpack und Eispack ermöglichen.
