Zusammenfassung
Die Lunge exponiert den Menschen über die Atmung wie kein anderes Organ den Gefahren seiner Umwelt in Form einer Vielzahl potentiell schädlicher gasförmiger, flüssiger und partikulärer Verunreinigungen. So enthält die Atemluft auch freie Radikale, Atome oder Moleküle, die ein oder mehrere ungepaarte Elektronen besitzen und dadurch eine ausgeprägte Reaktionsfähigkeit gewinnen. Vom Sauerstoffmolekül abgeleitete freie Radikale werden auch als Oxidantien bezeichnet. Beide Begriffe werden in der Medizin oft synonym gebraucht, da die medizinisch relevanten freien Radikale meist reaktive Sauerstoffspezies oder daraus entstehende Verbindungen sind. Freie Radikale stellen angesichts ihrer hohen Reaktivität mit alien zellulären und extrazellulären Ge- webestrukturen eine ständige Bedrohung fur die empfindlichen pulmonalen Gewebe dar. Oxidantien können eine Zelle irreversibel schädigen, indem sie strukturelle Bestandteile angreifen, mit vitalen Stoffwechselprozessen interferieren, oder die DNA verändern. Die extrazelluläre Inaktivierung wichtiger Moleküle kann deren Funktion beeinträchtigen und dadurch indirekt Schäden hervorrufen.
