Summary

The human and animal cell lines are a very promising tool for complementing and in perspective substituting the in vivo methods, at least in some biomedical disciplines as toxicology and cosmetology. The quality and reproducibility of in vitro assays largely depend on a deep knowledge of the cell line features and on the guarantee of operating with certified material. The cell line collections arose around the world in response to this need for well characterised material, free of cellular and microbial contaminants.

In Italy, only very recently the researchers have started to be aware of the need for quality control of the cell lines used in their experiments. In this frame, the Interlab Cell Line Collection (ICLC) has been set up in 1994 in Genoa, at the Advanced Biotechnology Center. The activity of ICLC includes: collection, production, quality control, characterisation, expansion, storage and distribution of human and animal cell lines and hybridomas.
