Abstract

Yearly tree-ring width sequences can be used for dendrochronological analysis, i.e., establishing the exact year in which each ring was formed (Stokes and Smiley, 1968; Baillie, 1982). This method has proved as a very useful dating tool in archaeological as well as ecological investigations (Creber, 1977). Measuring of tree-ring widths is traditionally carried out on cross-sections, which require some surface preparation before tree rings are readable (Schweingruber, 1988). For valuable wood samples (e.g., tools, vessels, wood-carvings from archaeological sites, art history) this method is not applicable.
