Zusammenfassung

Die Beobachtung, daß die Vermeidung von Nachtschlaf, d. h. eine nicht durchschlafene Nacht, die Symptome einer klinisch manifesten Depression (Melancholie) reduzieren kann, wurde zu Anfang von Fachkollegen und später auch von einer breiten ärztlichen Öffentlichkeit mit großer Skepsis registriert. Es konnte doch nicht sein, daß über eine Manipulation des Schlafes im Sinne einer weiteren Verkürzung der Schlafzeit (partieller Schlafentzug) oder einer völligen Vermeidung des Nachtschlafes (totaler Schlafentzug) eine Besserung der depressiven Beschwerden zu erreichen ist.
