The smallest branches of the bile duct system are the hepatic canaliculi, which in a centripetal way form acynar biliary ductules. These join into lobular ductules to further form subsegmental ducts. The subsegmental ducts join together into one or more segmental ducts, which can combine into sectorial ducts. The left and the right hepatic biliary system are completely separated without any anastomoses present down to the level of the confluence.
