Abstract
With improvements in imaging techniques for examining the liver, the internal liver structures have become clearer and can now be presented in greater detail. Identification of the hepatic veins and portal pedicles helps diagnosticians to determine which segment of the liver is affected by a pathological lesion, and its relation to the liver structures. Despite the incredible regeneration capacities of the liver tissue, surgeons are increasingly using segment-oriented liver resections. Advances in technique and new ways of treating cancer allow more tissue-sparing procedures, which require a precise knowledge of structural anatomy.
