Zusammenfassung

Bis vor wenigen Jahren war die öffentliche und wissenschaftliche Beachtung von Suchtkrankheiten im Alter so gering, daß ihre wirklichen Dimensionen für die Volksgesundheit völlig verkannt wurden. Diese Unsicherheiten über das tatsächliche Gesamtausmaß von Alkohol- und Medikamen-tenmißbrauch in höheren Altersstufen beruhten einerseits auf einem Mangel an präzisen Untersuchungen und sicherlich auch auf der Vorstellung, daß Alkohol- und Medikamentenprobleme bei älteren Menschen einfach als Folgezustände früher entstandener Suchtprozesse aufzufassen sind.
