Abstract

The algal lineage Glaucocystophyta is distinguished by its cyanelles (=plastids). Cyanelles were once thought to represent recent endosymbioses involving coccoid cyanobacteria since these organelles lack chlorophyll-b or -c, contain phycobilins, phycobilisomes, carboxysomes and concentric (unstacked) thylakoids and retain a bounding peptidoglycan wall. Phylogenetic analyses of the nuclear- and plastid-encoded small subunit ribosomal DNA of four members of the Glaucocystophyta provide evidence for a monophyletic origin of the glaucocystophyte host cell within the eukaryotic “crown group” radiation. The cyanelles of the glaucocystophytes are also of a monophyletic origin within this lineage, are “advanced” plastids, and form the earliest divergence within phylogenetic analyses including sequences from all other major plastid groups (excluding the dinoflagellates) and the cyanobacteria.
