Zusammenfassung

Wie in allen anderen Organen kommt es auch in der Lunge mit zunehmendem Alter zu einer Funktionseinschränkung. Besonders bei der Lunge wird diese Funktionseinschränkung auch von Faktoren mitbestimmt, welche außerhalb der Lunge gelegen sind. Die zunehmende Rigidität des Thorax, bedingt durch die Verkalkung der Rippenknorpel, und die degenerativen Veränderungen der Wirbelsäule spielen dabei ebenso eine Rolle wie der Rückgang der Auswurfleistung des Herzens (Connolly 1993). Außerdem rückt die Abnahme der Thoraxbeweglichkeit des älteren Menschen dessen Zwerchfellatmung stärker in den Vordergrund.
