Zusammenfassung
Das Immunsystem des Menschen weist mit zunehmendem Lebensalter eine abnehmende Aktivität auf (Horan 1997). Während die Häufigkeit von Infektionskrankheiten im Kindes- und im Jugendalter deutlich höher gefunden wird als bei über 65jährigen, nehmen das Ausmaß, die Schwere und die Komplikationen von Infektionskrankheiten im höheren Lebensalter deutlich zu. Dementsprechend nimmt z.B. die Mortalität der Pneumonie zwischen dem jugendlichen Alter und dem höheren Lebensalter nahezu um das 10fache zu (Garibaldi 1986). Zu diesem schweren Verlauf von Infektionen im Alter tragen viele Faktoren bei. Unter anderen sind der Ernährungszustand, der Flüssigkeitshaushalt, eine Bettlägrigkeit und zusätzliche Krankheiten von Bedeutung, doch ist auch die im Alter verminderte Immunabwehr am erschwerten Krankheitsverlauf beteiligt (Felser 1983).
