Abstract

Despite the enormous progress which has been made over the past several years in neuro-imaging, neurochemistry, neuropathology, molecular genetics, and epidemiological and social-psychiatric research, the understanding of the causes of psychoses within the schizophrenic spectrum has stagnated. There are hardly any findings which are accepted universally. Contradictory results are generally explained as being due to genetic heterogeneity and polygenic heredity in relationship to manifold environmental factors. The question keeps coming up: Is the spectrum of schizophrenic and schizophrenia-like psychoses a continuum of illnesses with continuous boundaries and common causes, or does it consist of separate illnesses with very different causes?
