DATATUR: Tourism Statistics Information System — The Experience of Spain
This article describes the project carried out by the Instituto de Estudios Turísticos for setting up a Tourism Statistics Information System (hereinafter called DATATUR). The Instituto de Estudios Turísticos has a wealth of information proceeding mainly from its own two surveys Frontur and Familitur plus the reprocessing of secondary sources from other national, regional or international bodies. All this information, whether in-house or brought in from elsewhere, is dispersed throughout the whole organisation in various formats: digital, texts, documents, graphs or images. It is therefore essential to set up a common platform capable of pooling all available information as a great “data warehouse for the tourism sector”. This would then serve as the starting point for “ a new use of the information, geared towards information and decision taking”. The project involves the creation of a statistical databank using the so-called Business Intelligence techniques, thus setting up, in the terminology of said technique, a Data Warehouse in all its phases. Among other things DATATUR will enable us to use information from the Economic Indicators System for the analysis of tourism, as defined by the Instituto de Estudios Turísticos.
