Zusammenfassung

Depression und Demenz sind mit Abstand die häufigsten psychiatrischen Erkrankungen im höheren Alter. Während sich die Depression subjektiv oft in einer Art resignativer Hingabe in das Schicksal körperlicher Morbidität und der Tatsache des zur Neige gehenden Lebens zeigt, ist die Demenz meist mit einer schleichenden Entfremdung, Orientierungsverlust und Pflegebedürftigkeit assoziiert. Im Folgenden sollen epidemiologische Aspekte mit Schwerpunkt auf den Prävalenzzahlen zur Depression und Demenz erörtert werden. Anschließend soll auf die Überlappung beider Krankheitsbilder eingegangen werden. Epidemiologische Ergebnisse können nur unter Berücksichtigung ihres methodischen Zustandekommens interpretiert werden, da hier die Basis für die Validität, die Güte der Daten liegt (Dohrenwend, 1995). Aus diesem Grund widmet sich der erste Abschnitt den methodischen Aspekten der epidemiologischen Daten.
