Zusammenfassung
Chlamydien sind obligate intrazelluläre Bakterien, die einen einzigartigen Entwicklungszyklus vollziehen. Der biphasische Vermehrungszyklus wechselt von sporenartigen, infektiösen, metabolisch inaktiven Elementarkörpern zu nicht infektiösen, metabolisch aktiven Vermehrungsformen, den Initial- oder Retikularkörpern. Der Entwicklungszyklus wurde erstmals 1932 von Bedson und Bland beschrieben1. Diese Forscher sowie Miyagawa und Mitarbeiter, die Chlamydien erstmals in embryonierten Hühnereiern anzüchteten, hielten sie zunächst für Viren2. Erst in den 1960er Jahren wurden Chlamy dien allgemein als Bakterien akzeptiert. Die Zellwand ist der gramnegativer Bakterien ähnlich, allerdings scheint Peptidoglykan zu fehlen, welches sonst einen wesentlichen Strukturanteil der Zellwand der Bakterien ausmacht. Wegen des Bedarfs an energiereichen Stoffwechselprodukten scheinen Chlamydien vollständig von ihrem Wirt abhängig zu sein.
