Zusammenfassung
Die Kleinstadt Kikwit in der afrikanischen Demokratischen Republik Kongo (früher Zaire) dürfte bis vor wenigen Jahren nur wenigen Leuten bekannt gewesen sein. Die internationalen Medien begannen sich jedoch für den Ort zu interessieren, als sich dort 1995 eine Infektion mit vielen Toten ausbreitete. Zwar sind solche Epidemien in Afrika keine Seltenheit. Malaria, Lepra, Tuberkulose und zahlreiche andere Infektionskrankheiten betreffen jährlich Millionen Menschen auf dem Kontinent. Jedoch starben in Kikwit 77 Prozent der 317 betroffenen Einwohner — ein Prozentsatz, der unter Infektionskrankheiten bis heute seines Gleichen sucht1. Die Epidemie breitete sich zunächst schnell aus. Infizierte bluteten aus der Nase, dem Mund, den Augen, dem After und den Genitalien. Viele entwickelten einen fast den ganzen Körper umfassenden Ausschlag. Die meisten Infizierten starben innerhalb weniger Tage. Ein Ebola-Virus (Zaire Ebola virus) aus der Familie der Filoviren wurde als Verursacher der Epidemie identifiziert1.
