Abstract
The incidence of pancreatic cancer is increasing nationally as well as worldwide. The linear trend shows an increase of 3% to 15.1 per 100,000 (WHO standard 7.9 per 100,000). In contrast to other malignancies, in about 42% of all cases of pancreatic cancer the patient presents in a disseminated stage at the time of first diagnosis. Early diagnosis is difficult, because pancreas cancers develop relatively slowly and without clinical signs until the tumor has grown to a large size. Unfortunately the results of curative as well as of palliative treatment are not satisfactory to date.
