Abstract

It is often necessary to convert spatial data from one reference system to another. For example, when one has determined the positions of some points in a local rectangular grid system (see Chapter 2 for definitions of the various reference systems), the positions may be converted to a national grid system, or vice versa, for various reasons. The conversion of coordinates between different reference systems, when the relationships between the systems are known, is referred to as coordinate transformation.
