Unresolved Issues in FDAP and PDT

FDAP techniques have already been developed in urology, gastroenterology or recently also neurosurgery. In dermatology, this technique has been used since 1997, however, a statistically relevant number of clinical and histopathological trials was still lacking. Several indications were tried to be treated by this technique. Response rates ranged from 0 up to 100% depending on the lesion selected, the follow up time and the treatment parameters. The FDA granted approval for the application of ALA in December 1999. Although FDAP and PDT are presently approved as officially legalized techniques and are increasingly included as routine strategies by dermatologists, there are still no defined guidelines.
