Zusammenfassung
Um Leder einheitlicher Qualität herstellen zu können, ist eine scharfe Kontrolle der Acidität oder Alkalität der Gerbbrühen unbedingt notwendig. Relativ geringe Änderungen in der Acidität der Gerbbrühen bedingen oft große Verschiedenheiten der Eigenschaften des fertigen Leders. Durch immerwährendes Abändern der Herstellungsmethoden bis zum Erhalt eines nahezu einheitlichen Produkts und strenges Festhalten an der so ausfindig gemachten Produktionsweise hatten die Gerber schon recht lange auch die Wasserstoffionenkonzentration praktisch unter Kontrolle gestellt, ohne allerdings irgendwie etwas Genaueres über die physikalisch-chemischen Gesetze der einzelnen Operationen zu wissen. Entging einmal die Acidität einer Brühe der Kontrolle des Meisters und stieg oder fiel auf einen abnormalen Wert, so war die Sache verzweifelt, bis man wieder aus ähnlichen Erfahrungen gelernt hatte, das wertvolle Hautmaterial vor weiterem Schaden zu bewahren.
