Bailey and Cushing were the first to estimate the malignancy of tumours on the basis of their extensive clinical experience. This was for the clinician a first and very fruitful advance. They had to take into consideration that in addition to the malignancy of growth there was also a clinical malignancy which in brain tumours more obviously than in any other tumours can differ from malignancy of growth.
