Abstract

The activity of protoplasmic streaming can be quantitatively expressed in two different ways; namely, in terms of the rate or amount of protoplasm carried by the streaming, and in terms of the motive force responsible for the streaming. The former has to do with the visible end effect of the phenomenon and the latter with its immediate cause. First, we shall deal with the former.
