Because of the limited interests and capacities of most investigators, partly for convenience and, perhaps too, as a consequence of the scientist’s appetite for pigeon-holing, it has been customary to distinguish heredity from development Darwin’s attitude that heredity is only a kind of development is, however, a more meaningful one so long as we make and maintain the all-important distinction between the phenotype and the genotype. And a part of development, division, is only a kind of heredity—cell heredity.
