Abstract
In animal cells and the cortical cytoplasm of plant cells tubular structures have been discovered which are called microtubules (Slautterback 1963, Ledbetter and Porter 1963). It was shown that they display the same morphology as the tubules in the mitotic spindle. Later also the neurotubules, the fibrils in undulipodia (Fig. 21) and even the “flimmer” hairs of hispid flagella in different algal groups (see 4.2.2.) were found to belong to the tubular family.
