Abstract
In 1945 Porter et al. discovered a fine network in the endoplasm of chicken fibroblasts which was called endoplasmic reticulum and abbreviated ER (Porter 1948). In thin sections it appears as profiles of isolated strands, elongated vesicles and cisternae, but serial sections, electron stereographs and freeze etchings (Frey-Wyssling and Mühlethaler 1965, there Fig. E-20) show that these elements intercommunicate spatially and form a real reticulum.
