Plasmalemma (PL)

Due to their importance, the cytomembranes which guarantee the compartimentation of the cell and separate the protoplast from its surroundings have become the subject of a new science called membranology. Special journals such as “Biomembranes” (Amsterdam: Elsevier, four volumes a year) deal with the chemistry, physiology, physics and energetics of these indispensable boundaries within and around the cytoplasm. It is interesting that this fascinating branch of biological research has its origin in investigations on the behavior of the plasma membrane (cell membrane) or Plasmalemma.
